Summer Heat is On
Check Irrigation, although we get most of our rain during the peak of summer, we also have the highest evaporation rates duting this time. It is imperative to have a properly functioning irrigation system. The day your irrigation system is scheduled to run, the rain sensor* will keep the system from watering if there is enough moisture. By Law, Irrigation Systems must have an automatic rain sensoring device that will prohibit a system from watering while there is enough moisture in the immediate area. Proper Mowing, There are a few factors to take into account to properly mow your lawn.
Height of Mowing, The type of grass you have will determine the height of mowing you need. The most commonly used grasses in our area are the St Augustine, Bahia and Zoysia grasses.
St. Augustine type grasses generally require higher cutting heights for optimal turf performance. The preferred cutting height for St. Augustine grasses range from 3” to 4.5” depending on variety.
Bahia type grasses, like the St Augustine grasses, prefer a higher setting but not as high. Bahia grasses spread by seed germination, it is good practice to allow your Bahia grass to display seed heads then mow with a mulching mower in efforts to promote seed germination.
Zoysia type grasses, require lower cutting heights for best appearance and performance. The preferred cutting height for Zoysia ranges from 1” to 2.5” depending on application.
Frequency of Mowing, mow your lawn on a regular basis but do not mow your lawn if it does not need it. Mowing on a regular basis will significantly reduce possibility of excess thatch and the possibility of overgrowth. Excess thatch and overgrowth mowing causes your lawn undue stress and can lead to permanent long term damage.
Clipping Removal, Clumps of Clippings NOT a good thing. Make sure to remove any clumps on your lawn it will damage your lawn.
Mowing Equipment, make certain your blades are balanced and sharpened
Good Mowing Practices, Change your pattern when possible and mow on a regular basis.
